At the beginning of this year, NSMHA earmarked funds to be awarded for consumer-oriented projects. Accordingly, a Request for Proposals (RFP) was published and advertised. A Consumer RFP Committee was appointed to guide the selection process, chaired by Joe Valentine, NSMHA Board of Directors. Participants included representatives of every group involved, including consumers, advocates, family members, a county coordinator, the RSN Advisory Board, the RSN Board of Directors, and RSN staff. Here is the list of the awards:

Provide supported education services to consumers

Acquire a van and driver training for consumer-owners

Provide consumers with social and recreational activities to decrease isolation and develop advocacy skills

Skagit Woodshop and Terry Simmons     $30,000.00
Start a workshop that employees 5 consumers. 

Nooksack Tribe, Jerald Folsom     $30,000.00
Harness tribal community resources and strengthen connections between youth, elders, and community.

Tulalip Tribes, Sherry Guzman     $30,000.00
(Partner: Tulalip Tribes) Provide a program for mentally ill tribal members targeting youth 5 - 12 and families suffering from mental illness.

Swinomish Tribe, Diane Vendiola     $29,768.00
(Partner: Swinomish Indian Tribal Community) Hold community forums and publish the information exchanged.

Recruit, train & support peer leaders/educators teaching other consumers about HIV/STD and other major communicable diseases.

Alzheimer Society, Josselyn Winslow     $29,661.00
Provide support groups for people in the early stages of Alzheimer's and training for their care givers.

Develop employment opportunities for consumers.

NAMI of Whatcom County, James Howe     $30,000.00
Train caregivers for family members with mental illness

Sedro-Woolley School District, LeAnne Trople     $30,000.00
Hire a mental health counselor at Central Elementary to guide teachers of autistic or behaviorally or emotionally challenged children.

Jeff Dyer and Shannon Fischer     $29,412.00
Hire three consumers as part-time peer counselors for high-need, mentally ill adults.

Provide mental health outreach into migrant farm worker camps in Skagit and Whatcom counties.
